From the Chair
FROM THE CHAIR
Greetings. I am the 2009-2010 Chair of the State Bars Labor and Employment Law Section. I write to tell you a little about us and then ask for your suggestions.
The Labor & Employment Law Section has been in existence since 1948 and serves as a neutral forum for the practice of labor and employment law in Texas. Our sections membership includes representatives of unions, management, individual employees, academics, mediators and arbitrators, and law students. The section is a place where all sides can come together and work for the common good of our professional specialty.
The section has many important projects, including a wonderful quarterly newsletter, a jury charge database (which is getting bigger by the day), a fall employment law seminar, and a summer internship program to support pro bono legal providers. We also make grants to non-profits for specific employment-related programs.
We have a number of standing committees on which we can always use volunteers. These include membership, pro bono, history, website, jury charge database and continuing legal education.
But enough about us. We want to hear from you. What do you think we should be doing as a section? We have a lot of wisdom and experience in our membership and we would love you to share it with us. Please let us hear from you during the coming year.

Labor & Employment Law Internship Program
The Labor and Employment Law Section of the State Bar of Texas will provide two stipends with a total value of $4,000 each to two Texas law students who spend the summer of 2008 working on labor and employment issues at a legal aid, pro bono or other such non-profit legal services organization or program in Texas. Through the internships, the Section expects law students to receive hands-on training in labor and employment law while having a positive impact on the clients they serve. The internships will enable law students to earn a stipend while working with nonprofit organizations that provide access to justice for low-income Texans. The Section prefers to fund internships for projects in which student interns primarily provide direct legal services to low-income clients. However, community outreach and education components will be considered.
